Our food bridges the gap between raw, homemade and commercial, ‘kibbled’ pet foods. We start with fresh, raw ingredients and gently dehydrate them so that almost all the valuable vitamins, minerals and enzymes remain. Dehydration makes food completely safe even for pups, and senior pets with compromised immune systems.
Our finished products are nutritious, delicious, and healthy – some even call them gourmet!
Production occurs in a human food facility right here in California, alongside products such as breakfast cereals and beverage mixes for human consumption. Our facility is FDA inspected.
What’s more – human beings actually taste our products as part of our diligent Quality Control Process – and all raw ingredients are individually tasted by people during Research and Development of every new diet we make. Not a lot of pet food companies can say that!
Values: The genesis of the
Honest Kitchen was the search for a human grade food that would be good
enough for our team’s own pets to eat; one that resembles a home made diet
in quality, encompasses variety, is economical, nutritionally balanced,
and quick and easy to prepare.
Advantages of dehydration:
Dehydration, or drying, is one of the oldest and gentlest methods of food preservation. Food dehydration works by removing only the water. Almost all other nutrients
remain–and become highly concentrated. Dehydrated foods are highly nutritious, easy to prepare and store, and light-weight to ship.
Our fruits and vegetables are harvested at the peak of their ripeness, cleaned and trimmed, then gently dried below 104 degrees so they are still considered raw after dehydration is complete. The meat and egg ingredients are dehydrated at a high enough temperature to kill any pathogenic bacteria that may be present, and the required temperature for this is above 120 degrees F. This makes them safe for human consumption–a requirement for entry into the human food facility where our products are made. Raw meat and bones may be added to our foods, if you wish.
Just add warm water! Once hydrated, dried foods resemble fresh food in terms of
appearance, palatability and nutritional value.
The removal of moisture prevents enzymatic activity, which can lead to browning and decomposition of foods and also prevents the growth of bacteria, yeast and molds. Dehydration does not destroy or kill the food enzymes, as occurs in cooking and freezing or high pressure processing, such as extrusion. Enzyme activity in dehydrated foods is simply suspended until the food is rehydrated.
Stirring up the petfood industry
Our foods are bursting with naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and phytonutrients–as well as healthy fats, protein and fiber–all the fuel dogs need to thrive and lead a healthy life.
Our products are guaranteed 100% human-food-grade because they are not produced in a pet food plant. They are made in an FDA approved, human-food-producing facility in Southern California, that makes the very same foods you eat.
Our foods contain absolutely no by-products, added salt or sugar, chemical preservatives,
artificial colors or flavors and NO beet pulp, rice, wheat, corn, or soy. These are common allergens for dogs and can cause dry, itchy skin, hair loss or dullness, lack of energy, chronic ear problems and chewing at the feet.
“Fast Food” has never been viewed as a wise option as the only source of nutrition, day after day, for human beings. But many major pet food conglomerates claim that a monotonous diet of “fast food” kibble and canned products is acceptable for pets. Many manufacturers have even promoted the idea that “people food” is bad for dogs, and will ‘unbalance’ what is in their bags and cans.
At The Honest Kitchen, we take a different view and believe a selection of fresh wholesome,
human grade foods are much better than the cooked mixture of by-products, fillers and other processed ingredients being served to many unfortunate pets, day after day.
